Our Seniors for Seniors program focuses on pairing senior dogs, typically aged seven years and older, with senior adopters aged 65 and above. We believe that these mature dogs, with their calm and gentle dispositions, make perfect companions for older adults. The program is in partnership with local senior centers and veterinary clinics to ensure ongoing support for both the dogs and their new owners.
Adopting a senior dog comes with numerous benefits. These older pets are often more settled and have established temperaments, making them great companions. For senior adopters, a senior dog can provide friendship, purpose, and a reason to stay active. The bond formed can significantly improve the quality of life for both the dog and the adopter.
Linda and her husband found joy and companionship in Bruce, a 9-year-old Border Terrier. "I have always adopted dogs, and when I retired ten years ago, I focused on adopting older dogs. My 14-year-old dog died recently, and I was lucky enough to adopt Bruce (formerly Scout) from Crisisdogs, NC. He is a 9-year-old border terrier and has been such a joy! He transitioned easily, has good manners, and is playing with my 12-year-old dog, Pepper. He is happy to run in the yard while I am gardening, loves daily walks in the park, and is just as happy to be a reading or napping buddy. My husband is not quite as mobile now, but he is walking outside to watch Bruce explore, and he loves that Bruce goes in to see him every morning. I can honestly say that little 16lb dog has enriched our lives, and I highly commend all the volunteers in the CrisisdogsNC organization for the work that they do”, says Alice.
